    1. Thanks! Snagged this info off NHL.com in the Shootout section with a little macro I wrote. Lots of Info on NHL.com. Salary info from Yahoo.

  2. Paul, nice viz.

First of all, I know nothing about hockey, so forgive me if this makes no sense. Should there be a relationship between salary and any of these measures you are showing in the scatter plots? What if you varied the size of the marks in the scatters by the salary of the player? Does it show anything surprising, especially about the higher paid players' career performance on these measures? Do teams pay more for great performance in shoot outs?

    1. For not following hockey, these are all good questions. Salary and shoot-out success aren't exactly correlated but probably should be. Winning a shootout gives your team an extra point in the standings. that point is often the difference in making the playoffs and not making the playoffs. The last team in the playoffs in 2012 was the LA Kings. They won it all. Wouldn't it make sense to have a shootout specialist if your already going to have a 4th line with fighting specialists? I think someone from the New York Times beat me to writing that article a year or two back if you google it.

  3. Great viz, but there seems to be some players missing. I was looking where Sidney Crosby rank in career stats and he's not there. Lots of people will probably look for him.
    Have a good day !

  4. Jean-Francois --- Sorry but when i cranked out this Viz last winter Sid had not yet taken a Shootout attempt in the 2011-2012 season so he was not included is the data I pulled from NHL.com.
Also I am a Flyers fan and didn't mind not seeing him there but your right his info should have made the Career Leaders graphic.
